Comments: We rented a 4WD Jeep a couple times while visiting the Big Island. It came in real handy when we decided to drive down in to Waipio Valley! The steep grade is unnerving! How steep is it? 25%!!!! This means you are losing 1/4 of distance traveled in altitude! So if you go 100 feet of level distance, you drop (or raise) 25 feet of altitude. That's how a grade is defined. We drove down and parked near the beach. Keep in mind that vehicles coming uphill and hikers have the right of way. So as you are driving down, stop at the wider sections of road to let them pass as it is barely wide enough for one vehicle most of the way.
