Comments: According to www.huapala.org the authorship of "Ninipo" is uncertain. The song has been attributed to both King David Kalakaua and Queen Lili`uokalani. The author wove many threads into this brief song of two verses and a chorus, with references to Hawaiian myth, geography, botany, and ornithology. The meaning is clearly many layered, with only the author and perhaps a few confidantes knowing the "real" meaning. Whatever the layers, the poetry is rich and the song seems perfect for Valentine's Day, with the first line of the chorus: "Wooing, ever wooing with love."
